Little Boxes: Der Song (Original)

Kurz nach den Pubertätshormonen erfassten mich in den 70ern späte Ausläufer der Woodstock-Welle. Peace, love, und Musik machen. Der Guitar Train des inzwischen verstorbenen John Pearse brachte es bei mir ins Rollen. Lange Haare, Vollbart, und keine Party ohne Klampfe.

Eines meiner Lieblingslieder war (und ist) ein Song von Malvina Reynolds, der Anfang der 60er Jahre durch Pete Seeger bekannt wurde und den schönen Titel "Little Boxes" trägt. Ein echter Ohrwurm, der mit einem Augenzwinkern im 3/4 Takt von "kleinen Kästchen" erzählt:

Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky-tacky,
Little boxes, little boxes,
Little boxes, all the same.

There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.

In den weiteren Strophen geht es darum, dass man studiert, Arzt oder Anwalt wird, Martini trinkt und Kinder bekommt, die dann studieren, Arzt oder Anwalt werden und Martini trinken: "... and they all get put in boxes, and they all come out the same". Ich hatte damals keine Ahnung, was ich wollte, aber definitiv nicht in so eine Box.

Little Boxes - Der Song (Webstandards-Mix)

Ich habe den Song vor einiger Zeit mit ein paar passenden Webworten versehen, die die Entwicklung von statischen Webseiten seit Mitte der 90er in vier Strophen zusammenfassen. Here they are: 

1.
Little boxes on a web page,
little boxes made of ticky tacky,
little boxes, little boxes,
little boxes all the same.

There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.

2.
And the words on all the pages
are tagged with H-T-M-L,
and they all get put in boxes,
little boxes, all the same.

And designers they designed them
with tricks like single pixel GIFs
and with tables made of ticky tacky,
it was pretty, but such a shame.

3.
'Cause the source code was a nightmare
and the content not accessible,
so a few web page designers
pushed web standards all the way.

And despite appalling browsers
they fi-nal-ly made it work,
scrapped the tables and the blind GIFs,
CSS is here to stay.

4.
So the content and the layout
are now completely separate,
all the words are still in boxes,
but they're now laid out with style.
